In honor of Holt Collier and his hunting dogs, this year’s Great Delta Bear Affair will feature “Holt’s Hound Dog Hoopla”, a dog show for any and all breeds of dogs. This fun event will take place at the Main Stage at 9:30 a.m. on festival day, October 27.
The Incredible Holt is the theme of the 2018 Great Delta Bear Affair. Holt Collier was President Roosevelt’s hunting guide on that famous 1902 black bear hunt in southern Sharkey County.
Holt Collier was an incredible hunter. He had been hunting with a gun to feed himself, others, and as a source of income, since the age of 10. As an adult, Collier trained dogs to hunt with him, to scent out animals, and bay them. His pack of dogs became famous in their own right, and Holt’s favorite dog was a yellow mongrel named Jocko.
Dogs participating in “Holt’s Hound dog Hoopla” will have the opportunity to perform any tricks they may have, and/or show off their singing voice in the hound dog howl competition. A variety of awards will be given by our celebrity judging panel.
There is no fee to enter the competition. Dogs must be current with all vaccinations and must be on a leash. We want to keep our festival grounds neat and clean, so poop bags will be provided. Join the Hoopla! Registration will begin at 8:45a.m. at the Main Stage. For more information on Holt’s Hound Dog Hoopla please call 662-873-6261.
